Thanks everyone.

As it seems to be working ok, I'll just stick with this until the no doubt .28 or whatever turns up in the future. If I find any strange stuff, I'll do another install from the factory .27 file.

Ah ok - the the CF isn't a full firmware, just a patch for the full firmware. Maybe the docs need to be changed, because it wasn't clear to me

I presume you got the Custom Firmware file from the WiKi Firmware page, here is the note from the top of that page :-

I didn't immediately jump on it, but I was a little put out that he said the documentation wasn't clear and then admitted to only having looked at the install video.

Well I apologise Black Hole - your docs are fine. I was reading through the stuff, got to the link for the video, watched that and thought this doesn't look to hard. I should have read the wiki page fully I guess.

I've had another look at the Wiki page - and you're right, it's the first thing mentioned.
