Damn Accurate Recording (AR)

As I had a few shows that were running back to back on different channels I decided to try AR (Accurate Recording)

I usually have padding set to -5 and +5 which has served me well for many years (even on a Humax 9200)

I changed the recordings using WebIF a couple of days ago.

Last night I had 4 failed recordings, 1st time I have ever had an email about it.

/Pat and Cabbage/Pat and Cabbage_20130919_2030
/Peaky Blinders/Peaky Blinders_20130919_2100
/Sound of Cinema_ The Music that Made___/Sound of Cinema_ The Music that Made____20130919_2100
/Shaun the Sheep/Shaun the Sheep_20130919_1515

I am so annoyed becasue I think I can see why the top 3 failed as I recorded something on 5* using AR that should have been on 20:00 to 21:00 but for some reason recorded for 179 minutes:

Start Time Thu Sep 19 20:01:14 2013 BST (Scheduled: Thu Sep 19 20:00:00 2013 BST)
End Time Thu Sep 19 22:59:58 2013 BST (Scheduled: Thu Sep 19 21:00:00 2013 BST)

Why the hell would this happen?

Next question is why would Shaun the Sheep not record when there is nothing else to conflict with it? I'm sure I saw a popup on the screen at the time of the episode while watching something else.

The info from the file is:

libpostproc 52. 0.100 / 52. 0.100 /media/My Video/Shaun the Sheep/Shaun the Sheep_20130919_1515.hmt: Invalid data found when processing input

Any help greatly appreciated.

It looks like I'll just have to go back to padding my recordings if AR still doesn't work.

Accurate recording only works properly if your box is tuned into a single transmitter. What is shown on the webif->diagnostics->channel (might be slightly different words) screen?

(I'd quite like a box with a Damn Accurate Recording feature!)

:)

Yeah now I read the subject back it does sound more like a compliment.

Bang goes that theory then. A failure on that scale certainly isn't common amongst AR users.

Hopefully somebody will have recorded some of those and can comment, or will have more ideas.

Posted on the move; please excuse any brevity.

I have not had much experience of "mixed mode". I joined the AR converts about 18 months ago when something changed (I don't know whether it was the broadcast quality improving or to do with a spontaneous factory reset on my system), although the HDR I have deliberately tuned across two regions must be on padding. However, I rarely record anything away from the mainstream channels.

My thoughts are that maybe AR will perform better if applied in the global settings rather than on an individual basis (by tweaking the schedule parameters). We have no proof that this works, only observation that it seems to work.

I can only presume it's because 5* didn't stop the 20:00 to 21:00 recording on time.

That doesn't explain why the 20:30 to 21:00 recording of Pat & Cabbage failed though as the 2nd tuner should have been free.

Oh well no more AR for me.

The usual question if you are watching time delayed is something like "do you want to stop watching and record the scheduled item" or "do you want to carry on watching and not record it". You cannot have both (annoyingly, unlike the 9200). I guess you selected the latter option.

libpostproc 52. 0.100 / 52. 0.100 /media/My Video/Shaun the Sheep/Shaun the Sheep_20130919_1515.hmt: Invalid data found when processing input
That's stupidity from the WebIF, which ought to be trapped out. It tries to feed a .hmt file into something that's expecting a .ts input.
Unsurprisingly, it doesn't work.
The .hmt file only shows when the .ts is not there (for example due to failed recording).

I was just watching a different channel and saw the recording start icon appear on the top left of the screen with the channel.

Is there anywhere on the WebIF I can check to see why this happened?
The RS Server displays some details of items that were recorded (Home Page >> Recent Activity) and if you have redring installed there is a log that shows more detail like this :-

Are you sure all the recordings completely failed?

When using AR a recording is flaged as failed even if only a second from the start of the program was missed. The recording would be completely playable but the file would have the broken icon and rs will email you a warning.

Not saying that is what has happened here but something to consider.

Yeah I have things in the past that pop up a window before playing that says the recording failed but they play fine.

These recordings won't do anything and all show zero minutes recording on the box and a file size of 12k via ftp.

What can I do to diagnose the problem?
If allowing us to switch from a padded recording to AR or vice versa doesn't work should it be removed from the WebIF?
