Disk failing

That's the one I have in my T2, and P had another 1GB one in my Foxsat. Very quiet. No problems.

Is it just a case of removing the faulty disk, slotting in the new one and job done?

Mostly. If you're running Humax firmware 1.03.xx then it should manage to format it for you. I would still check for proper alignment of the partitions using the 4kalign diagnostic.

You'll need to re-install the custom firmware bits that live on the disk but that can be done through the standard initial web interface that it provides.

Thanks af
Makes sense to me to replace with the same type of disk and they're £50 at amazon for the 2TB disk
I am running firmware 1.03.xx

I have a 2TB WD Purple (WD20PURX-64P6ZY0) which I bought for another purpose. Out of interest, I installed it in a HDR-FOX and ran the 'smartctl' commands. On this model, these commands are unsupported.

I asked a related question (here): if one happens to have a full backup of the old disk, on external USB, is there a recommended way to install/restore the custom firmware, such that settings, etc, are not lost? thanks much...

Most/all of the CF (on disk) is in /mnt/hd2/mod, so you need to transfer that folder (using the Telnet command line). If the machine in question already had CF before the disk swap, the stuff in flash will already be in place. I'm not sure whether there are any other tweaks required, I don't think so.

Thanks af

I bought one (£55, not £50) and it arrived today. Before I opened it I checked the date code: 23 April 2013!! It's going back.

Note to self: return to your previous policy of not buying from Amazon Marketplace. Stick to 'sold by and fulfilled by Amazon'.

had you asked the marketman what the date was prior to buying?

It was listed as 'New'. In my world, 2013 isn't 'New'. Amazon Marketplace appears to think otherwise!

As well as it being over 2.5 years old, I could see marks on the casing and dust inside the transparent packaging. I couldn't see any 'warranty void if removed' stickers either.

Checking his feedback later, this would appear not to be the first time.

OK, so perhaps you were miss sold, but they don't make this model any more. There is only a VERY slim chance that you would be able to buy a new one. Thinking it through, didn't 'alarm bells start to ring'? It would for me: £50 for a NEW HDR Fox T2. Not likely to happen.

The box you received may be perfectly serviceable and for a bargain price, IMHO.

Don't cut off your nose to spite you face is what I am trying to say.

We're talking about a hard drive, not a complete Fox T2!

Ahh. I stand corrected. Completely got 'the stick wrong end of'. Lol

My apologies, it's been a busy day. Caffeine required.

The replacement Seagate Pipeline 2TB disk arrived yesterday from Amazon.
I also noted that the manufacture date was March 2013 - that doesn't bother me, but there are about 10 dents in the metal disk casing - that does.
So that's going back in the morning.

If it is dated 2013 then any warranty claim in the future may well be problematic. That was the primary reason for me returning mine. That, and the distinctly not-very-new-and-unused state of the casing inside the unopened antistatic bag along with my dislike of being treated to what amounts to a scam.

I suggest you call Amazon and advise them of what's happened and of your displeasure. That might get the vendor removed: they say they'll be speaking to him following my complaint.

As you mentioned there were no warranty stickers on it either.
I wrote that the item is obviously not new and had a dented casing. Refund was confirmed immediately and it's being collected tomorrow.
It came in just a thin bit of bubble-wrap in an Amazon book delivery bit of cardboard and was just dropped through my letterbox.

I'll hang on here a while (and hope my failing disk disk has a few more revolutions left in it) to see if there are other recommendations, or I may go for -
WD 2TB AV-GP SATA 6GB/s 64MB 3.5" Hard Drive £65
unless anyone advises me not to.

Perhaps I am unnecessarily cautious but for HDDs (and computers) I buy from well established, specialist online retailers.

Mine was also packaged like a book and was left hanging in the letterbox for anyone to steal, or to fall onto a hard floor or concrete. The delivery notification in my account said it had been handed to the customer'!

I've got another 2TB Pipeline coming from Ebuyer at £68.
