I realise Saturday afternoons are traditionally for sport, but...

Black Hole

May contain traces of nut
...one always used to be able to rely on a black & white musical on BBC2! Or at least I could in the 70's.

BBC1: Wimbledon
BBC2: Wimbledon
ITV: Rugby
C4: F1
C5: T20

Jeez.

How on earth are we getting $ky Sports Cricket for free on 5. I thought the owners of Sky had bought some part of ITV not 5.
You missed racing on ITV4.
The film channels have nothing of interest.
Shopping, food, news, god botherers, cops or children's programmes anyone?

You missed racing on ITV4.
I didn't, but (1) I was only originally thinking of the pre-digital channels, and (2) I wrote a follow-up post saying "ITV4: Horse racing" but didn't click the "post" button (or perhaps it didn't register). When I came back in the draft was still there.

I thought that about the F1.

I have always hated musicals but I have fond memories of the Saturday westerns and Abbot and Costello movies on BBC2

If only there was some way of watching something from the huge range of programmes that the broadcasters have on hand in their library ... 🙄

I thought that about the F1.
F1 is live because UK is the host country. Each country hosting a race gets to show it live if it had only otherwise subscribed to delayed transmission. It always has been like that, even under Bernie (although there were some arguments with him over some of them).

In the 70s?
Oh, you mean now. Depends whether you have fast unlimited broadband. From what I remember BH hasn't. I have a slow mobile phone access with a data limit. Can't get carried away.
Or you have in your own personal collection...
I have, many in a foreign language with subtitles. Requires an effort to watch. Must get around to it. Too many Italian series to watch.

No, sorry, I'm not equipped for that (except on my iPad screen), and even if I was I'm rather traditionalist – unlike GenZ (or whatever) who wouldn't dream of watching linear TV, I think there is value in the mixed content you (should) get instead of binge-watching self-interest content.

I don't recall that I have, no. I do have a few things in the archive on VHS/DVD/Bluray, but I'm too much of a fidget for binge watching. What I obtained was almost pointless – nearly everything gets re-run now we have a multiplicity of channels, but the things I don't have, don't get rerun because it's too old and not sufficiently low-brow for Talking Pictures (et al).

My only hope is that BBC4 digs it out of the archive. EG (I may have some details wrong): James Burke's Connections (circa 1975); or the series of three epic 3-hour documentaries The Restless Earth, The Weather Machine, and The Violent Universe, presented by Magnus Magnusson (IIRC). Having said that, the science may now be so far behind the state of the art that they are irrelevant or incorrect.

Connections is available on the Internet Archive (Three series can be accessed at https://archive.org/details/bbc-connections-1978). Rather than play them directly it is possible to download and save should you want to.

Trouble is the reruns are plastered with warnings, cuts or bleeps. Even TPTV, who claim to be preserving film history, dip sound and blur pictures. Show the damned things at a time when you don't need to censor them!
Can't believe that U&Dave is bleeping QI for minor swear words when showing after 9pm.
TLC with New Mock The Week is a strange one. On at 9pm, if someone says a swear word before about 9:10 "bleep", After that all sorts of swearing. Although now they are bleeping the C word at any time. In the first new episode two passed the censor quite early.
