I'm at a friend's, with an FVP-4000T (I think that's what the label on the bottom says). It has an RM-L08 remote handset with a FreeviewPlay button on it. Press the "recordings" button and it says there aren't any (she says there should be), but tellingly the screen display seems to say that it has zero capacity to record any.

Can anyone suggest how to diagnose? I can't see a settings button on the remote. I've power-cycled it in hope... but that does not seem to have made a difference. Where the heck are the disk utilities???

I suspect you're going to have to remove the disc and add it to either a Linux box or HDR Fox T2 to run fixdisc. Given the HDR Fox T2 stayed on an older version once newer versions were found to be putting things in the FS it didn't understand, an HDR Fox T2 might be a safer bet.

Settings on the 4000T/5000T are through the Freeview button on the remote control. From there you should be able to navigate to the Disk Check facility.
Freeview button> Settings> PVR Settings> Storage> Internal HDD. HDD Test.
The disk is pretty noisy on these models so stick your ear up close to confirm it is spinning or feel for vibrations.
Download the manual from the Humax UK website. The 4000T is two tones in colour and the 5000T is all black.

Select Freeview Box Recorders under Category then select 4000T or 5000T and then User Manuals and download, go to page 28 for the 4000T.
 
Not likely to be helpful as it looks like the 4000T may have a disk problem but - quite often when my 5000T is switched on and recordings pressed it shows no recordings (not sure about disk status). After a short while the recordings screen disappears and then reloads with a complete list.

Unfortunately, I can't remember what I had to do when the list wouldn't reload. I suspect it involved complete removal of power for over 5 minutes, reboot, factory reset and loss of recordings.
 
I have never understood why "removal of power for over 5 minutes" should make any difference. I admit I didn't do that, just power-cycled it... but even a power-down for a few seconds is a power-down.

Possibly allowing a capacitor or inductor to fully discharge. I can remember having a scare with the 5000T along the lines you mention. (Fingers, legs and anything else firmly crossed) It has worked properly since that problem. No removal or replacement of disk. Whilst I can't remember exactly what I did and which bit got things working again, I do remember one or two long power offs (half-one hour). Maybe it'll do something, maybe it won't. What have you got to lose - time.
 
Weirdly this happened to me at the same time. But but with fox t2. Did the unplugged for 1/2 hr hard restart. Nothing. Odd coincidence it’s not software problem is it??

I checked for firmware and latest is 2022. And was to date apparently.

Fairly common approach, I've come across it multiple times. Including on all the products my previous employer manufactured, with anti tamper labels that you really could not remove and put back on without it showing. But then they were police radios.

My mistake it is an FVP-5000T model not FOX T2. I’ve not had a chance till today to try and sort this out.
I would apprecaite some advice please.

When I go to recordings It’s showing no recordings and 0GB available. I just went back and now it is still showing 0GB HD and 0GB SD left, but 3 recordings which I suspect are from the external drive even though I’m looking at the internal recordings (and the external drive has many more recordings in it).
I can’t pause live tv etc so no disc function.
I did a disc check as advised above. The FVP is showing 97% storage is used, and total capacity 931GB. (1TB version). Disc check says says Internal HDD Passed, no defects are found.
The disc is spinning, the box is humming to the touch and warm to the touch, but not excessively so.
I’ve checked the manufacturer software is up to date, version UKTFAE 1.03.54 Build date 25 May 22.

My laptop is a macbook I don’t have access to windows or Linux. I do have an external 2TB HDD 3.5 inch SATA drive with plenty of space left on it. Can’t remember how to transfer anything from one to the other though.
Any idea how to get my FVP-5000T running as it should again please?

PS I really appreciate all the work that has gone into this site and advice.

Do the menus offer HDD format? The alternative is to Factory Reset (including HDD format). Yes, I know you'll lose any existing recordings but that's the alternative if you don't want to try fixing it on the command line. Macbooks run a version of Unix so that should be OK, it's only Windows you need to be careful of. Or yoou could just fit a new disk and preserve the old one in the hope of one day recovering files off it.

The FVP-4000T I was playing with didn't offer access to the storage sub-menu at all, even after Factory Reset (I no longer have immediate access to the unit, but I have its disk!).
