Puzzle Corner

B3, E4, E5, D2, D1, B1, B4, C4, C3, C2, C1, E1, E2, B2, B5, C5, A2 by which time we're well into the trivial.

B3=5

A3=[2|4] ∴ A4=[4|5], but D4=[4|5] ∴ E4=3 & E5=2.

C1 & E1=[4|5], ∴ B1 & D1=[1|2]. But B4=[1|2], ∴ B2 & B5=[3|4]. C2=[3|4], ∴ D2=2, E2=5, E1=4, C1=5, D1=1, B1=2, B4=1, C4=2, C3=3, C2=4, C5=1, D3=4, D4=5, D5=3, B2=3, A2=1, B5=4, A5=5, A4=4, A3=2.

If it's any help, here's a sample of an intermediate stage of my "notes":

Huh. Beat me to it.

I am perplexed by today's Wordle, presented here as a teaser for those who don't normally look at it (don't open the spoiler if you do). I get these in 3-5 as a rule, but I'm struggling to think of a word which fits.

As an introduction: the player has to divine a secret 5-letter word by offering valid 5-letter words to be scored. A letter marked green is in the right place, a letter marked yellow is in the secret word but in the wrong place. The secret word is selected from the American dictionary!

Now, back to my machinations...

Update: bugger. Obvious really (but several possibilities so how many goes is a question of luck).

...and here's the Mail's version, proving at least as perplexing (or am I just off the boil):

Update: there are only a couple of possible solutions so far as I can see, and one of those is really obscure!

With these games, the number of guesses required is heavily dependent on your luck with the first couple of words.

Unlike the Futoshiki which I’m finding impossible after the first trivial move.

D1=1
C2=1 because 1 can't be anywhere else in row 2
C4=2 because 2 can't be anywhere else in column C
[B1 B2 B4] = [3 4 5], so 5 in row 3 must be at C3
C1=4 B1=3 A1=5 C5=3
[A3 B3 E3] = [1 2 3], so D3=4
D5=2 B5=1 B3=2 A2=2 A3=1 E3=3 A4=3 A5=4 E5=5
E4=1 E2=4 D2=3 D4=5 B4=4 B2=5

Hard one, I think!
A5=1 A2=5 B4=5 (trivial)
[A3 B3 D3] = [1 2 3] ∴ [C3 E3] = [4 5], but [E1 E5] = [3 4 5] ∴ E4=1
[C3 C5] = [4 5] ∴ C4=3
D4=2 A4=4 C1=2 C2=1 B5=2 B3=1 D3=3 D2=4 B2=3 B1=4 A3=2 A1=3 E5=3 D5=5 C5=4 C3=5 E3=4 E1=5 D1=1

Regarding Saturday:
C2=1 because 1 can't be anywhere else in row 2

I can see A2, B2 and E2 can’t be 1. But I’m not seeing why D2 can’t be 1. Argh!
Even when the logic is explained I can’t see it. Oh dear!

Edit: Ignore this. I was unwell yesterday and had a poor night. I’m talking a load of bow locks. I can see the second move. Doh!

Today's "3-star" Kurosu actually requires one inference for a change! Still not worth the effort of putting it up though.

I can't understand the ranking in GuessWord (only available in the on-line Mail). Even when I crack it in three goes (which is heavily dependent on lucky choices), I get ranked very low. I think it must be measured on how long one takes regardless of how many guesses taken.
