[redring] Show red LED ring when recording in standby + other options...

I have a problem with the ring showing bright red, when it should be bright blue, when it is on, but not recording. Nothing else suggests that it is recording and I can edit channels.

If I restart, the ring behaves as expected until after the next recording.

I have tried a force install of redring and run the fix-flash-packages diagnostic a couple of times, but the issue comes back.

I am not sure if this is a bug or not. Any suggestions welcome.

Nothing immediately comes to mind. Can you turn on redring debugging (I think that's an option on the settings screen - can't check from here) and post the log entries around a recording ending with the ring remaining red?

Thanks for the really prompt reply. I will post a debug log later, when I can restart. the logging seems to have stopped a few hours ago.

Looking at the last few hours of the normal log, there seem to be a number of "too many recordings" entries. I don't know if these are significant. Most of the programmes listed as being recorded (eg The Pallisers and Waking the Dead) were in fact files being copied to usb.

Feature request: different brightnesses when playing and not playing

Would it be possible (if not too difficult) to add a new option to the VFD brightness, which adjusts it according to whether the box is playing a recording or just showing live TV? I find the elapsed time count extremely useful during playback, and need it pretty bright* to see the time accurately. But when watching live TV, having the channel name up is less important - there is usually a DOG on the screen, plus it's easier to read a hard-to-read name than a hard-to-read number.

My reason for wanting lower brightness during live TV is just to extend the life of the VFD, otherwise I could switch to the clock display if I just wanted to not show the channel name. I tend to leave the box "fully on" most of the time, so the channel display is on most of the time. (And yes, I do know that leaving it on 24/7 is probably not the optimum thing to do, but it's useful for DLNA serving etc)

(Maybe this has been discussed before and rejected already - sorry, I did search but didn't see anything.)

* Yes, I have removed the orange filter

@TonyC - I've added this to Redring 2.16 which is now available.

This version also makes another change that might help with the occassional-morning-blue-ring syndrome.

I have had a few issues recently, three I think, where the red ring stays on after recording has finished.
In the case below, the red ring remained lit for nearly four hours after recording finished, only clearing when the hummy went into auto standby mode at 2am.

Does the recording actually stop, or have you got the runaway recording problem? Check the length of the recording(s) it didn't switch off for,
Presumably you have done a full mains off/on cycle as the first thing you should always try as first step in fault finding.

Okay, that might clear a fault situation, but it doesn't help track down an intermittent bug. I wouldn't describe it as "fault finding", more "fault recovery".

Nit picker. :frantic:
For most people a power cycle is the first thing to be tried to see if it fixes it. If it fixes it, so well and good. If it doesn't, scratch your bum a bit, employ any FF techniques that you know of then ask on a forum, but say you have power cycled to save the responder asking.
An intermittent fault will invariably re-appear after a power cycle, so you have not lost anything, apart from a bit of time, in trying it.
How many threads have you read whereby, after lots of posts, diagnostic 'print outs' etc, have you read whereby the OP eventually posts "So I power cycled it and it's now OK" (they always start with 'So')? This is caused because the OP hadn't tried a power cycle and the first responder did not ask if he had.
At least I responded this OP with the relevant question.
So instead of nit picking my arguably incorrect use of the expression 'fault finding', make a suggestion that might actually help the OP solve his problem to save this thread being cluttered up with non constructive posts like this one.:p

I think you've missed my drift (and the point of post 394). It's a bug report, not a request for help - so which is the unhelpful post?

Is it a bug report? As Black Cloud has not posted in this thread recently, if at all, and he starts his posts with "I have had a few issues recently", it is reasonable to assume that it is a 'request for help' rather than a post along the lines of 'mine does that too'.
I asked him to check the length of the recordings to try to establish whether his 'problem is caused by a redring glitch or the 'runaway recordings' thing.
I think you've missed my drift
No I didn't. I think your 'drift' was along the lines of how you manspelled it in your post, to which I fully agree, 'fault recovery' rather than 'fault finding'. I have already conceded my error in my previous post.

More unhelpful clutter.;)

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.
