Assume v. Presume

How would you say

Mt Olympus?

"Mount Ollimpus"
If you think on it abbreviations like Mt, Rd, Mr, Mrs, Ave, etc are spoken in full (by most normal people). The abbreviations are purely for the written form. Unlike, for example, hasn't for has not which is used for both written and spoken forms.

That seems to be the (imperfect) distinction between a dotted abbreviation and an apostrophed contraction (an exception being how they contract place names on road markings - apostrophes are used but I can't believe the intention is to pronounce it that way).

Ca'an is common in Mallorca. Also C'an. Very confusing if you try to say them. Or Google them.

Which raises the question, why use Mr at all in print? Just use Mister. What is saved? If you don't like typing 4 more characters, use autotext.

Plus, for people who type Mr., they only save 3 characters.

Can't agree. There's iron in the chemical make-up; it doesn't rust because the chromium in it forms a protective oxide layer. Not the same thing at all.

(Not that this is grammatical nit-pickery)

That's interesting. Some of my (female) friends have old fur in their wardrobes and don't dare wear it or know what to do with it - I have speculated that these days they could use it and it would pass as faux!

Dye it pink or blue or something ... sorted

“So incredible. It’s brilliant. It’s genius,” Trump said after the missile strike in Syria.

“Our technology, our equipment is better than anybody’s by a factor of five.”

You mean like the Mother Of All Bombs isn't the biggest after all. Or was the 'fact' that someone has a bigger one fake news as well?

As it's AvP I'm going to pick this one. Mother of all means all (bombs) are descended from this one, which patently isn't true as this is a fairly recent device. The MOAB was presumably built by Guy Fawkes or someone back then.
It should be called BOACB (biggest of all conventional bombs).

It isn't even the biggest. Their biggest is the one they may use in N Korea, the MOP.

Russia has a bomb four times as large as MOAB.

That's the one I was referring to. I think that the 'mother' in this instance is more along the lines of big mother f***** of a bomb rather than the usual family reference.

The 'mother of all ...' is just a nickname. MOAB is actually Massive Ordnance Air Blast

... though of course they may have reverse engineered that from the 'mother' name.
