Assume v. Presume

In certain photos it looks as though a bomb could have been tested there. Is is too close to New Mexico to be a coincidence?

Most tests were done in Nevada. It is in the Four Corners state boundaries, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.

If you watched the fundamentalist Mormon three wives series, it's there.

...unless sounding like A as in neighbour and weigh (and then follows a list of exceptions even to that).

Unfortunately, many people can't remember (or never even knew) that there is a second line to the mnemonic.

Among all ei or ie words in the Oxford English Dictionary, 5414 words follow the rule of thumb “i before e, except after c”, and 2807 break the rule.

The deficiencies of this rule should be weighed very carefully before deigning to adopt it. It has many inadequacies, not being at all efficient in predicting correct spelling. Therein lies its major problem. Either ignore it or let it deceive you in many cases, not just with foreign words, either. What a weird rule!

"I" Before "E" Except After "C"
by Duncan McKenzie

It's a rule that is simple, concise and efficeint.
For all speceis of spelling it's more than sufficeint.
Against words wild and wierd, it's one law that shines bright
Blazing out like a beacon upon a great hieght,

It gives guidance impartial, sceintific and fair
In this language, this tongue to which we are all hier.
'Gainst the glaceirs of ignorance that icily frown,
This great precept gives warmth, like a thick iederdown.

Now, a few in soceity choose to deride,
To cast DOUBT on this anceint and venerable guide;
They unwittingly follow a foriegn agenda,
A plot hatched, I am sure, in some vile haceinda.

In our work and our liesure, our homes and our schools,
Let us follow our consceince, sieze proudly our rules!
Will I dilute my standards, make them vaguer and blither?
I say NO, I will not! I trust you will not iether.

I rest my case.

I'm surprised I can spell at all. Anyone else part of the initial teaching alphabet experiment at primary school?
Or should that be: ITA.gif

No i before e in those spellings. After two years of that alphabet, I had to learn the proper English alphabet. What a waste of time!

A stupid disaster. There's no way education theorists should be allowed to experiment on children - they are unable to consent, and it has the potential to ruin their lives.
