Assume v. Presume

That thesaurus link reminds me of the episode of QI where all the different meanings of "jigger" were explained.
Never heard of "tenfoot" or "gitty" supposedly used in the East Midlands.

Ten foot is local to Hull I think and refers to the slightly upmarket rows of houses where they made room to have wider alleys than the usual as they were ten foot wide. Very literal us old Hullites. :)

Presumably they'll object to "bigger", "digger" and "rigger" for similar reasons.
It's just stupidity that deserves to be ignored.

Non-Words

I don't really know what else to call them. There's the "aw" noise people (particularly women) make to express a positive emotional response, and what's this "jijsh" (no idea how to spell it) as in "jijsh it up"?

Zhuzh seems to be the most accepted spelling.

having lived in East Midlands for over 60 years I’ve never heard of them.
I have (I left when I was 18, but seem to spend more time back there here than not these days), though we usually called it an "alley".

The one that gets me tittering is when someone says words like folks or chaps.
