Interesting Items...

I was brought up not to be seen drinking or eating in public. I was in a coffee shop yesterday (OK OK, that's public too but you know what I mean), and there was even a young mother in there eating a panini with a knife and fork (that's a wonder in this day and age!) but drinking Pepsi straight from the bottle. Standards? Nobody below the age of 50 seem to know what standards are.

Well posted that man! Now find some funny photo(shops) illustrating the American definition of irony (ie sarcasm).

According to the June 2014 issue of Everyday Practical Electronics (EPE), Panasonic are releasing a series of 4k TVs starting below £2k, with HDMI 2.0 (what trouble is that going to cause), and built-in Freeview, Freesat, YouView, and FreeTime.

Lloyds this year are going to allow customers to register their mobile phone.

Bacs payments will then be able to ref the mobile number as well as account number.

Not sure exactly how this would work as it was only mentioned in updated T's and C's but an 11 digit number to reference as well as account number must mean the risk
Of an incorrect payment is miniscule.

That's not quite what I have heard. The banking "industry" is working on a way to make payments to a mobile number, as this is a means of identification avoids having to give out bank account details (although I have never understood how giving out your BACS details risks somebody withdrawing money from the account).

The problem with BACS is you only have to make a minor error in the "to" details for the money to end up in the wrong place with no right to get it back - the payee reference is not cross-checked. In a separate initiative the banks are also looking into ways of verifying the account, so maybe mobile phone numbers are coming into this as well.

I have one mobile phone. I have four current accounts. How does this work? Will I need to buy three more SIM cards, or are virtual SIM cards allowed?

I don't see any inherent technical problem linking one phone and SIM card to as many accounts as you like. I guess you would need to nominate a default account.

Post 114 seems to be saying the mobile number will be used as a verification that the sort/account details are correct, so that wouldn't be a problem. The business of payment to a mobile number would require that only one bank account was registered to that number, and that the user verified the mobile number was correct before proceeding (easier because there is not likely to be any retyping involved).

Exactly. Not much use to me, then.

This was heard spoken by a journalist talking about UKIP and immigration control:

"Yes, but with our ageing population what we need is immigration. The immigrants who come here generally have large populations of children and that is what is needed to support the increasing numbers of retired people in Britain."

Yes, but will you throw them all out when they get older? It seems to me that this is s short-term solution, like fossil fuels and fracking. I am not anti-immigration, but this seemed to be the silliest argument for it I have ever heard, assuming there are even jobs for those children when they are ready to work.
