Media mistakes

Did he mix him up with his brother I wonder?
Perhaps he was being sarcastic calling PoW "her majesty", just like some people (ie. me) do when referring to those with an over-inflated ego as "your majesty". If so - off with his head!

Clearly, as Sir D is a regular. But it's a bit poor.

I somehow doubt it. I've heard people do the opposite - referring to the king/queen as his/her royal highness - who really should know better.
referring to those with an over-inflated ego as "your majesty".
I can't say "Kate" would be put into that category. Now that dreadful American woman is a different matter altogether, and would be worthy of the sarcasm.
(I didn't see her on Ct.1 yesterday, nor did she scan my ticket for entry.)

My general knowledge seems to be lacking. World Cup coverage zooms onto a VIP box and the commentator says "and there is so and so" but I have no idea of which of the several people on view is so and so. 🙄

(only one I have recognised is that infamous photo-bomber John Terry)

I don't either of those is necessarily true. It's just general knowledge, or the lack thereof.
They shouldn't have to rely on general knowledge, and I'm sure they never used to have to. Presenters etc would have been told what the correct form of address for Her Royal Highness is. As for the Richard Attenborough faux pas, that's definitely bad, but did you hear the prize presentation for the Boat Race?

You can't brief a commentator about everything they may possibly want to say, especially if you don't know what they are going to say and when they are responding to unpredictable events.

I did, and probably cringed at the time, but the detail has evaporated from my brain since, so you'll have to remind me.

Same commentator, different match/court, just downgraded Brian Cox to Dr from Prof.
Briefing notes are provided by the club to the media as to who's in the royal box on the day, so there's no real excuse again.

It is bad form but I think I'd allow that. A doctorate is a degree that you pass an exam for. Professor is a job title that many universities give to lecturers with seniority. Any old lecturer can be an assistant professor these days, and you can be as thick as a brick and be appointed as an associate professor. Don't get me started on my opinion of "honorary degrees".

Here are another two. One from a couple of weeks ago and one from last night:

Wimbledon/Wimbeldon. Also if he'd been at Wimbledon in 2019, 2023 wasn't his debut. Oh, debut as an adult singles player.

I see that well known actor Seen Been made an appearance! Or should that be Shaun Baun?

I see the 07:10 repeat of the ball kicking business is still billed as "MOTD Live..." with a description of "Live coverage of...".
Surely it can't be live over 6 hours later? Anyway, the result follows.
Mexico won.

We get the same thing in the arts, not just sport. "Live" is now taken to mean "recorded with an audience" (and I'm not sure it's uncut either).

I suppose you could argue that if Sky Arts listed "Live: Classic FM 25th Anniversary Concert" it should be live. But it is listed as "Classic FM Live: 25th ...". Is it live (or is it Memorex :) )? No, as you say, recorded in front of an audience. Doesn't really work for MOTD. More like recorded as live with no post-production editing. If there has been editing I wouldn't describe it as live. With MOTD there really is no reason to use "live" with a repeat showing. False advertising!

The other way often used it to label it as a "rerun". But that can also be taken to mean they replayed the match. How do you suggest a repeat showing of live coverage be labelled in a short, snappy manner that does not confuse anyone including yourself?

I actually went to bed as normal and woke up naturally (no alarm) at six and watched the match over my first coffee of the day. Slight hiccup in that even though I had manually extended the recording time in case of extra time/penalties the one hour rain delay meant that cut off two minutes short of full time. Which meant risking spoilerage while navigating iPlayer to catch the end of the match.

Actually there was one other slight hiccup in that I had decided in the end not to watch the Brazil v Norway match live as sleepage kicked in (*) but catch up with the highlights in the morning but of course that risked the England game commentator mentioning the result and of course they did not disappoint. 🙄

(*) already been up early watching Paraguay v France (as) live then work in the morning then SA v England (as) live then F1 (as) live - amazingly my drinks score for the day was Coffee 4 Small bottles of beer 2 Small tot of whisky 1.
