How are you distinguishing between a new drive and one that might have had its SMART data wiped? However a 2017 manufacture date suggests it can't have done more than about 15,000 hours max and probably less.

I haven't seen this drive sold by Amazon for the best part of a year. There have been some with the same price tag as yours being sold by a 3rd party seller. Are you saying that you also bought it from Amazon and that it wasn't just fulfilled by Amazon?
Just scanned through this - but don't know how valid this is now for 2TB drives as its talking about a CF version of 2.12 which is a little old. If I buy the above 2TB drive do I need to do something with the partition 2 these days?

No, it's a Linux system. The native firmware can only read NTFS, writing to NTFS (on a USB drive) is made available by the CF ntfs-3g package.

The parameters that are recommended in the 2TB Blog page will make the system use the large partition where recordings go more efficiently, but you can apply them after letting the Humax format the disk (before filling it with recordings): search the forum for "tune2fs".
You don't need to. You may (or may not) wish to. Filesystem checks are quicker if you do.
I don't think you can change the directory hash algorithm or number of inodes except at format time.
Their business address is Ottobrunner Str 2, Putzbrunn, 85640, DE which sounds very German to me. I am deeply suspicious of drives from this and similar sellers. I am fairly sure most of them aren't new; some will I guess be OK but there will be a significant number that have problems.
For a drive above 2TB the partition table needs to be in a GPT style as opposed to the MBR style used by Humax. You need to use the Custom Firmware to format the drive see https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Very_Large_Hard_Drive

The benefits are quietness and lower power consumption. The standard drives are fast enough to easily handle the Humax workload.
