Perfect - thanks everyone for the replies. the drive should be here tomorrow (I was a little confused and thought it would be here todaym but I'd ordered it just after midnight, so naturally it said tomorrow!). I'll get a snapshot of the SMART status and let you all know how it goes.
Thanks!

Thank you, guys for your help. Hard drive arrived yesterday and I've just put it in. No problems whatsoever, recognised straight away and the Humax asked me if I wanted to format. It took a couple of minutes but it did it and the result is 2Tb total size, 1802.7Gb available, 20Gb used, 197.1Gb reserved (not sure why it's reserving 200Gb).

The date of manufacture looks like September 2017, and the SMART stats (below) seem to say that this is a brand new drive:

HumaxPlayroom# smartctl -a /dev/sdb
smartctl 6.4 2015-06-04 r4109 [7405b0-smp-linux-2.6.18-7.1] (local build)

What's with the 200Gb reserved? Is this normal - and can I get it back?

Thanks!

Black Hole

The hardest part is buying the right drive.
Unlike here:
Ive installed the new HDD (500GB, CS29474 from CPC as suggested by @everthewatcher earlier in the thread).
When I power on the device, I get my TV picture and my TV guide, but there's no automatic option to do any formatting.

When I press MEDIA on the handset, nothing happens.
If I go to its IP address on a web broswer it says "The system is initialising". That page keeps reloading and eventually it gives up and says "no hard disk is detected".
If I try to do Menu >> Settings >> System >> Data Storage >> Format Storage, I can't select Data Storage because it's greyed out.

Looks like it's not detecting the HDD.

Can anyone make any suggestions? Thank you for any help you can offer.

How are you distinguishing between a new drive and one that might have had its SMART data wiped? However a 2017 manufacture date suggests it can't have done more than about 15,000 hours max and probably less.

I took it that the counters are real. The disk looks new, no marks or scratches. Fully sealed and direct from Amazon, not a 3rd party seller. Either way, it’s better than what was in there :)

Which is what counts. ☺

I haven't seen this drive sold by Amazon for the best part of a year. There have been some with the same price tag as yours being sold by a 3rd party seller. Are you saying that you also bought it from Amazon and that it wasn't just fulfilled by Amazon?

Ah, yes, it was fulfilled by Amazon, but sold by Abel-TV Handels GmbH.
It came straight from the Amazon warehouse up the road from me by the looks of things, as it arrived next day.
Just ordered another one for my other identical HDR T2.

Apparently Amazon uses some sort of machine learning to pre-order third-party products into its warehouses so that the predicted demand can be fulfilled directly. Then they came for your electronic doorbells. Then they came for Sarah Conner ...
