replacing hard disk

Perfect - thanks everyone for the replies. the drive should be here tomorrow (I was a little confused and thought it would be here todaym but I'd ordered it just after midnight, so naturally it said tomorrow!). I'll get a snapshot of the SMART status and let you all know how it goes.
Thanks!

Thank you, guys for your help. Hard drive arrived yesterday and I've just put it in. No problems whatsoever, recognised straight away and the Humax asked me if I wanted to format. It took a couple of minutes but it did it and the result is 2Tb total size, 1802.7Gb available, 20Gb used, 197.1Gb reserved (not sure why it's reserving 200Gb).

The date of manufacture looks like September 2017, and the SMART stats (below) seem to say that this is a brand new drive:

What's with the 200Gb reserved? Is this normal - and can I get it back?

Thanks!

Perfect - thanks everyone. That was easy. The hardest part is buying the right drive. This one seems to have done the trick!

The hardest part is buying the right drive.
Unlike here:
Ive installed the new HDD (500GB, CS29474 from CPC as suggested by @everthewatcher earlier in the thread).
When I power on the device, I get my TV picture and my TV guide, but there's no automatic option to do any formatting.

When I press MEDIA on the handset, nothing happens.
If I go to its IP address on a web broswer it says "The system is initialising". That page keeps reloading and eventually it gives up and says "no hard disk is detected".
If I try to do Menu >> Settings >> System >> Data Storage >> Format Storage, I can't select Data Storage because it's greyed out.

Looks like it's not detecting the HDD.

Can anyone make any suggestions? Thank you for any help you can offer.

How are you distinguishing between a new drive and one that might have had its SMART data wiped? However a 2017 manufacture date suggests it can't have done more than about 15,000 hours max and probably less.

I took it that the counters are real. The disk looks new, no marks or scratches. Fully sealed and direct from Amazon, not a 3rd party seller. Either way, it’s better than what was in there :)

Which is what counts. ☺

I haven't seen this drive sold by Amazon for the best part of a year. There have been some with the same price tag as yours being sold by a 3rd party seller. Are you saying that you also bought it from Amazon and that it wasn't just fulfilled by Amazon?

Ah, yes, it was fulfilled by Amazon, but sold by Abel-TV Handels GmbH.
It came straight from the Amazon warehouse up the road from me by the looks of things, as it arrived next day.
Just ordered another one for my other identical HDR T2.

Apparently Amazon uses some sort of machine learning to pre-order third-party products into its warehouses so that the predicted demand can be fulfilled directly. Then they came for your electronic doorbells. Then they came for Sarah Conner ...

Hi All,

Some of you may now I've been posting in a number of topics lately due to similar HDD issues. Time to bite the bullet so I'm after a new HDD. I've tracked down the same HDD on Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Seagate-ST2000VM003-Pipeline-3-5-Inch-Internal/dp/B008B0RQ1C). It's hard to tell though if that is a recon or new. Again fulfilled by amazon by a third party... sounds german but they say they are based in Wembly.

Correct, although you may wish to re-format partition 2 as per the 2TB blog on the Wiki. (https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/2TB_Disk_Installation_Blog)
Just scanned through this - but don't know how valid this is now for 2TB drives as its talking about a CF version of 2.12 which is a little old. If I buy the above 2TB drive do I need to do something with the partition 2 these days?

Question - does the humax really need to be formatted in Ext3 or can it handle NTFS? Asking this because any problems with the drive would allow it to be plugged into a windows 10 PC more easily (eg copy data off! In the end I had to plug my poorly HDD into my "spare" ;) Humax and use FTP to copy the data off that I could - yes I did try my linux boot disk but window 10 for some reason wouldn't let it boot from disc!)

Question - I was thinking about a SSD drive (https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-SD...eywords=sandisk+1TB+ssd&qid=1598707222&sr=8-4) - they are a lot more money but are there any major benefits other than silent running? Can you recommend a 1TB model (I wouldn't go 2TB). My "spare" humax has an SSD in (sandisk 500MB) but I wasn't involved in setting it up and it required some modification and needed a caddy to hold the unit in the housing.

Question - Setting up a new HDD is hopefully going to be easy but could anyone point me to any notes or instructions in what to copy over from the old HDD in order to restore the channel list, schedule and other webif / package based settings? If there perhaps a set of folders I copy over? The packages are more or less upto date.

Thanks

Rodp

No, it's a Linux system. The native firmware can only read NTFS, writing to NTFS (on a USB drive) is made available by the CF ntfs-3g package.

Drives up to 2TiB are supported natively in Humax firmware 1.03.xx. Drives over 2TiB can be fitted and installed as GPT using CF facilities.

No, the only real benefit is the silence.

How long a modern SSD with last with the PVR workload is a subject of disagreement. I broke a first-generation SSD quite quickly.

The other benefit is that they are easier to find and will empty your wallet a bit quicker for a lot less storage.
Mind you, having said that, a quick Google indicates that 2TB is between £170 and about £450 compared with about £60 for a spinny thingy.

The parameters that are recommended in the 2TB Blog page will make the system use the large partition where recordings go more efficiently, but you can apply them after letting the Humax format the disk (before filling it with recordings): search the forum for "tune2fs".

You don't need to. You may (or may not) wish to. Filesystem checks are quicker if you do.

I don't think you can change the directory hash algorithm or number of inodes except at format time.

Their business address is Ottobrunner Str 2, Putzbrunn, 85640, DE which sounds very German to me. I am deeply suspicious of drives from this and similar sellers. I am fairly sure most of them aren't new; some will I guess be OK but there will be a significant number that have problems.

For a drive above 2TB the partition table needs to be in a GPT style as opposed to the MBR style used by Humax. You need to use the Custom Firmware to format the drive see https://wiki.hummy.tv/wiki/Very_Large_Hard_Drive
Question - does the humax really need to be formatted in Ext3 or can it handle NTFS?
It has to be Ext3

The benefits are quietness and lower power consumption. The standard drives are fast enough to easily handle the Humax workload.

If you want a suggestion for what hard drive to use I would suggest a Seagate Skyhawk bought from a reputable supplier.
