Sagemcom BT/EE TV Box Pro

So can you use the EE TV Box Pro without an EE Broadband connection or subscription?
You can - unless you’re using EE WiFi it won’t receive any WiFi tv channels like NHKWorld or AlJazeera but it allows you to log in to IPlayer, Prime and YouTube. I haven’t used any others so I can’t comment on them, but from my limited experience of this box the apps are snappy and much less laggy than on other STBs I’ve used.

BTW does anyone know have there been any improvements made to either of the Auras via update recently?
When I plugged in my EZ a week or so ago I didn’t notice anything different.

I have had a Humax Aura for about 4 years now and it does the job however it needs to restart once or sometimes twice a week which takes too long and after that get blank screen several times. :(
I also have an Arris Freesat recorder which isn’t much better. :o_O:
So when the Humax Aura EZ came out it looked promising but after reading a few reviews and after experiencing my existing Aura which has no updates I decided to wait.
Then I read on here about the EE TV Box Pro and being able to use it in Aerial mode only to just view and record Freeview channels with up to 4 channels simultaneously.
I am thinking of buying one on Amazon although a little dearer than ones on Ebay, I assume returns are easier on Amazon than Ebay if I did need to return it.
Am I right in thinking all Freeview channels I get on Aura I will get on EE TV Box Pro without an EE subscription?
Has anyone had both the Aura and EE TV Box Pro to know what the differences are?

I’ve had an Aura since its release and fortunately I am one of the few lucky ones who have a generally well behaved box. I think regular Freeview resets helps which I do every three months or so.

I also have the EE TV Box Pro in the bedroom and have to say even though my Aura is a good one the EE box is much more intuitive and user friendly. my technophobe Partner picked it up instantly. The only thing I initially missed was the ability to jump forward/backwards for the adverts but the fast forward/rewind buttons works just fine. It receives all the same Freeview channels and the catch up services are much better integrated with the ability to add programs from them to ‘My TV’ for easier locating/viewing at a later date.

The only oddity I would say is the HDD spins all the time (extremely quietly), except when it is deep sleep. I just changed the standard deep sleep settings to wake at 7am and shutdown at 12pm as that is the main time we use it. It only takes 60 seconds to wake from deep sleep anyway so it’s no big deal when I need to watch something out of that time.

The App is far superior to the Aura one, but you need to be mindful that it will not accept remote requests to add a schedule if the box is in deep sleep. It will try for a while before finally timing out, not a biggie as I rarely use it. If I was going away I would set the deep sleep to its default settings and then it would be ready to accept scheduling within a bigger time window.

As it’s not Android so there is obviously no App Store so you only have the Apps that the box comes with, but all the main catch up services are there, plus you can add NOW TV subscription and Netflix if you need them.

I purchased mine from Amazon for £114 as I wanted an easy return if I wasn’t happy, but if I buy another I will get from EBay for £90 or less brand new.

At this rate the EE box will need its own thread 😆

Hope this helps.

Also when you bought off the Amazon third party seller do you get a 1 year warranty as I'm interested in this box.... CHEERS.

If the forward and backward buttons work why can you not skip adverts?

You can fast visually forward/rewind Freeview recordings, but it doesn’t have the ability to jump eg 2 minutes at a time and eg back 15 seconds at a time like you can on the Aura.

I have no idea, all I was interested in was easy 30 day return if I wasn’t happy.

Nothing much to go wrong so year’s warranty is not an issue for me if there isn’t one.

That is a little bit disappointing as I use it a lot with the Aura to skip adverts, usually 4 presses fast forward seems to about right to skip most adverts.

Thanks Steppy for the reply much appreciated, just had a reply from Topgeazer through Amazon it has a 2 year guarantee. 👍
That’s good to know.

There is another seller that has them too, but TopGeezer has lots of positive feedback and he adds a very detailed setup guide in the box that states the importance of making sure your aerial is plugged in before first setup, otherwise it tunes to internet mode which has limited functionality.

Are you able to get these HD channels I mentioned in a previous post and record them without a subscription ?
5Action HD
5Select HD
5Star HD
5USA HD
As far as I am aware I have not seen those on the Aura in HD and I have just checked the EE box and they are not on that either which makes sense.

Looks like you need Freesat or Virginmedia for HD versions.

The info about them came from the EE site that we both linked to, maybe subscription only then or those channels have been dropped since that link wrote about them.

EE TV channel listings

Good to know

For details on which channels are included in each EE TV package, please check the EE TV Packages page.

Possibly dropped then as all the other subscription channels including Paramount/NOW tv etc. are shown in the guide after the standard Freeview channels.
