Detect ads not working with ethernet loopback cable.

Hi guys,

I'm having trouble getting detect ads to work with a loopback cable. My humax is not connected to an active network and have always had to have it plugged into an old offline router in order for detect ads to work. Recently I made a loopback cable but I can't get it to work.

At first I made one with pins 1>3, 2>6, 4>7 and 5>8.

In internet settings it says 'network disconnected', and if I try apply settings in configure Lan, it says 'network connection has failed'. If I plug back into offline router and apply settings again, I get 'network connected' and detect ads works for a short time only

I made a second plug with only 1>3 and 2>6, still fails on apply settings but does say 'network connected' in internet settings so thought it would work but it isn't.

I've read a few threads on here after searching for loopback ethernet but I'm not seeing what I am doing wrong.

Any help much appreciated.

I've tried both. I get network connected when allowing DHCP to set the IP and network disconnected if I try manual and set the IP to the loopback IP address.

DHCP
IP address 169.254.60.155
Netmask. 255.255.0.0
Gateway. 0.0.0 0
DNS. 0.0 0 0

Manual
IP address 127.0.0.1
Netmask. 255.255.0.0
Gateway. 0.0.0 0
DNS. 0.0 0 0

I would try manual with a proper address of your choice e.g. 192.168.0.1 and 255.255.255.0
Don't use the loopback address on a physical adapter (and the netmask is technically wrong - should be 255.0.0.0).

Should be 1-6 & 2-3.

Methods 4 & 6 imply a network is available. Methods 1, 2, & 3 require a network connection is present, despite there being no interaction with other network devices. In the absence of an existing network connection, this can be accomplished by inserting a loop-back plug* into the Ethernet socket on the rear of the HDR-FOX. Only method 5 does not interact with a network (or the Ethernet socket) at all. * For details see https://tikkiweb.net/1997/05/make-your-own-ethernet-loopback-connector/, or buy one off eBay.

Back again, detectads has stopped working.

When booted up last week, the Humax was on the set up screen as if it had been reset. I forget the name of this. Has happened a few times in the past. This time detectads never resumed functions.

Put ethernet cable between Humax and router and router to laptop to check settings. Everything normal. Detectads works when plugged into router. Put loopback cable back in and doesn't work. When loopback cable is in, it says network connected in Humax internet settings, content share is set to on with boot settings. Any idea why it won't work?

What error is detectads actually reporting? (detectads.log or auto.log depending on when invoked)

I can't see it in the webif. Trying to run it in telnet. Just sits on 'Running: fix-flash-packages' so unsure if it's actually doing anything.
diag procedures require an active internet connection - cannot be run with loop back

Code:
3560 in procedure 'close' called at file "/mod/bin/chaseget", line 165
3559 in procedure 'getfile' called at file "/mod/bin/chaseget", line 453
3558 /mod/bin/chaseget:165: Error: child process exited abnormally

Not sure what is causing these errors.

Can you successfully run decrypt on these recordings?

Ahh, I don't have the ability to get the Humax online as I live away from a wired internet connection and use mobile data via a wireless hotspot. I just use an old router to connect the laptop to the Humax for the odd bit of maintenance.

Something catastrophic has happened as now I am unable to access the webIF, the screen says 'custom firmware successfully installed' and gives me options to download and install the full web interface or acces telnet menu.

I will have to take the Humax to a friend's house to reinstall webIF and packages.

That should work. I used to have an installation in a non-Internet household where I used a WiFi dongle on the HDR through the hotspot on my phone – and I could link my iPad to the same phone and access the WebIF through it. No need for a router in the middle (although that's an acceptable alternative if you don't have a dongle).

You should use the Telnet menu to go into Mainenance Mode and run checkdisk – the "something catastrophic" of which you speak is (probably) disk failure and/or file system corruption and you will need to sort that out before trying to reinstall anything.

My Humax doesn't have wireless capabilities so I can't connect it to my phone's hotspot unfortunately. I should get a WiFi adapter for it actually. Is there one that you recommend?

I couldn't see checkdisk but running fixdisk now.

You can also use detectads with software decryption... this will be much slower than the hardware assisted decryption
That's the point of using a loop-back in the Ethernet port – it enables hardware decryption without an actual network.

Yes, But software decryption is a valid option for those without a loopback plug or experiencing problems with it as in this case
