HDR-Fox T2 Constant Deleting

Do you let fixdisk mentioned in (1.) run fully before you switch off the box?

Yes well it said some thing like completed what do i want to do next ie run another program. I watched it count up to 100%. When I first ran fixdisk it was so slow to show any activity So I tried to come out or chose another program a message came up A Program is running do you want to cancel so I always left it to run its full course.

The wake?
This one:
I can lay this issue to rest now!
That was some forum banter - you have to be sharp around here!

I have attached a copy of the Webrowser Not secure with word Jim? at the end.
Nothing to worry about, and it didn't need redacting... as I have tried to explain: knowing the local IP address of your HDR-FOX (or any other hardware on your home network) is of no value to anyone (and easily guessed).

Top right hand corner one word Deleting with a buffeting symbol constantly going round . But no actual recordings are being deleted, even the programmes I want to delete do not delete. The file disappears when I press delete but returned after fixdisk.
This is symptomatic of either the file system becoming read-only (so that a normal deletion process cannot reach a conclusion), or there being some kind of corrupt file (which I guess shouldn't be cured by a fixdisk... which it was so it isn't). That you temporarily cured it with fixdisk, and then it came back, suggests to me that a failing HDD is odds on favourite. Connecting a USB drive isn't a contributory factor to this problem appearing, unless there's something I don't know about it.

USB flash drive - I uploaded the first t firmware in the custom firmware ending 80b0) but their are two others? what are these? have I uploaded the correct one.?
Look at the file names:

HDR_FOX_T2_1.03.12_mod_3.13.zip
HDR_FOX_T2_1.02.32_mod_3.13.zip
HDR_FOX_T2_1.02.20_mod_3.13.zip
You told us you are using Humax firmware version 1.03.12 (which is the most up to date one), so isn't it obvious which of the three you should use for the custom firmware?

Also Firmware has Debug Kernel & Stock Kernel plus supporting files? is it worth I try another firmware?
These are for special purposes (read the notes alongside)... not for you!

Ps while the firmware is running is it ok to watch tv from my Smart tv/IPlayer terminal?
So long as it doesn't involve the HDR-FOX (which is inoperative while fixdisk is running anyway), why wouldn't it be?

Can I also ask the forums what is the actual fault problem listed in my diag reports?
I'll leave that to others.

Is there a consensus I run other tests if so which or buy a new drive? (without losing my recordings)
I realise some people say the HDD can be rescued, but you've tried that already and how long are you willing to keep messing around? The more messing around you do, the greater the risk of losing recordings. I've already given my recommendation, so take it or leave it.

Good afternoon All

I have ran another diag report as advised there seems to be one fault now as oppose to two from my previous report.

It would helpful to understand what this fault means? as the hard drive needs replacing. I'm trying to ascertain if the drive is on the verge of crashing? As I need to move my recordings . Also I have not fully made use of the Package Management I've only got webif some of the further upgrade packages are self explanatory. I am trying to find a package that will help transfer my recordings any suggestions please? or do you think I should stay clear of adding any additional packages as the hard drive is on its way out.?

I fully understand my sever lack of IT knowledge is very frustrating for this site so my advance apologies for that . Your feed back on the attached reports further/upgrades would be much appreciated.

Thank you
Blu

It doesn't. It isn't.

You have 10 bad sectors on the disk, which have been remapped to spare ones. This is not indicative of disk failure or the need to replace it (at this stage).

I really would expect Blu to be mightily confused with BH telling him to replace the HDD and prpr telling him there is nothing wrong with it.
I think a third and fourth opinion are needed here, and I don't know enough to give one.
But my gut would say with only 10 reallocated sectors and no offline uncorrectable errors, I'm with prpr

prpr Thank you very much, this is exactly what I was hoping for a clear translation of the data I have presented. On my 1st diag I had two files highlighted in orange. I didn't know if this was a serious hard drive issue.

Trev Thanks also your comments sum up the situation perfectly, feedback is appreciated.

This is a fantastic site loads of stuff but the tech stuff can be difficult to translate but this is how I learn painfully - Last week thanks to a lot of you I managed to get the firmware/software onto a usb stick then on to my device. I now know how to diagnostics, fixdisk

However the seed of buying an internal drive is on my mind

Not "files" – lines in the SMART data report. That had been confusing me, I was't sure what your were referring to before.

You might not need to replace the HDD, it is a question of balancing the cost and effort of doing that against the possibility of multiple rounds of disk-fixing and the inconvenience thereof, and the value you place on your archive. My advice was based on my assessment of your attitude to the above considering your experience so far. Spending £60 or so for peace of mind doesn't sound a bad deal to me.

[Famous last words and tempting fate.] I have a 2Tb USB Seagate portable drive that had about 10 bad sectors over two years ago and has never caused any further problems. At this stage I wouldn't panic. (Although I did when it happened to me!)

Ditto. One of our boxes had 8 pending in red a few years back. Remapped with fixdisk and (as above, touch wood) nothing since.

Hello some advice please bear with me as I don't know the correct terminology

2 days ago I went into webif/freeview online and downloaded quite a few upgrades from Package Management When the upgrades finished Humax rebooted and an instruction came up hard drive needs to be formatted I declined. because I have saved recordings.

Sometimes the whole video file disappears then reappears after rebooting, my saved recordings all still work. but when I try to move a programme copy/move to my external drive the video file freezes kicks me out. the humax box message says Crash -wait re-booting seconds later I'm back in on a tv channel.

In storage I have a virtual file & my WD external drive. which I can access but virtual drive is empty I ran another fixdisk but don't understand the results. .
I have also tried Factory reset and got a message - hard drive needs to be formatted. Which I don't want to do.

I cannot get into webif access/ Freeview no diagnostics nothing I also get 500 internal service error. The only items that come up is the virtual usb which either comes up at 94% or reappears at 4%

Also in maintenance Mode Diag command I don't what codes to put in to run a diagnostic report. would it help to do this?

Advise on what to do next please
fixdisk report? Result - meaning ? I have the full report but it's a lot of snapshops

Should I remove the upgrades can this be done?

What is the virtual usb for is this holding all the upgrades because the file is empty?
Because I have not formatted the internal drive dose this mean the upgrades cannot take effect?
Why can't I see Package Management and all the other programmes?

Dose any one know any Humax specialist within the M25 I could pay to sort this once and for all.
Despite the really helpful advice it is like being a goldfish swimming with sharks.

Thanks
Blu

Why not insert the whole report into your post (code tags) or as an attachment? We've been here before: Newbies' Guide to the Forum (click).

Should I remove the upgrades can this be done?
It's not the package upgrades that have done this, it is the flakiness of your HDD.

If you recall, my advice (contrary to other opinions) was to stop fiddling with the system immediately, so as to minimise the risk to your recordings. Do you believe me now? STOP FIDDLING. The stats might not say so, but as far as I am concerned cascading faults indicate imminent failure.
  1. Fix the disk
  2. Turn off and don't use it until you...
  3. Replace the disk
  4. Copy what you need from the old disk.
If you also recall, we have offered to do this for you.

Thanks for everyone's advice and guidance The device is working I can access my recording, record & delete. constant deleting symbal has gone. It's working! The system crashes when I press the move/copy - WD external device works but have now unplugged .

Salvage/Rescue/Repair

The offer to repair my device came from a person in the North of the UK. I am looking for a technician in or around the M25 as I want to deliver the device myself. I would like to be present and watch the work being done. Not sure how technicians work? do they have their own business premises? or do they work from home? If the latter then this will not be possible. I did not want to put my device in the post and have a possible complications of it being damaged.

I am able to put 1 day aside to deliver, go off and wait while a long program is being run and collect at end of day. If its possible to talk with a technician & pay for their time, then I can consider further options and the logistics around my appliance.

Full fixdisk Report - the snap shots I have will be approximately 30 individual attachments is it ok to attach that amount.?

Thank you
Blu

My advice is to buy the correct type of replacement hard drive and then take the Humax and new hard drive to a computer repair shop and ask them to change it for you.

Copying your programmes back from the old drive is something you can do yourself.

If all you have are screenshots, then possibly not because there is a total attachment size limit. What you could have done is copy&paste the text from your screen into a file or into a forum post. I guess that ship has now sailed.

Yes, it shouldn't be a problem, with the forum guide to disassembly for reference (unless you are unlucky and pick somebody who doesn't have the right attitude). However, I think it would be cheaper, and low risk, to post it to one of us - especially if you still have the original packaging. At least you can trust we know what we're doing.

If you were more forthcoming about your location (town), somebody might volunteer to visit.

Thank you yes that could be an option? I'm in London I've been looking at old threads Martins I think

Quote: Providing the Humax is using firmware version 1.03.xx. I fitted a Seagate ST2000VM003
Quote: Just replaced the original Seagate Pipeline 1TB that came in my HDR Fox T2 with a Western Digital WD Purple 2TB Surveillance hard drive.

So my new internal will still be limited to 2T

Could you please recommend the exact make and model of the most durable internal drives around today? I did see a link for ebay but not sure about buying tech stuff off it. If know of any other sites that would be appreciated whats a reasonable price for a new one?.

And as for my old drive once my recording are removed would it be worth keeping as an external drive I would have to buy a housing case for it ?

Brands: IronWolf, Barrcuda, Firecuda, Western Digital.

At least you can trust we know what we're doing.

Yes I would believe you guys are the best option or i could try

Thanks I'm seriously considering all options But I'm sure I prefer peace of mind, I want a brand new internal drive.

Do you know the reason why I can't access produce management , diagnostics? just keep getting the virtual usb at 94%

Kind Regards
Blu

So: Is there anyone with the necessary experience and within easy reach of London willing to help out? It would be a bit of a journey for me, and I couldn't even consider it in the next fortnight.

So my new internal will still be limited to 2T
You are limited to 2TiB by the operating system, unless you take special measures (which I'm sure you would not be comfortable with). See Things Every... (click) section 12. My earlier cost estimate did not budget for a 2TiB HDD.

IronWolf, Barrcuda, Firecuda
Those are all made by Seagate (different ranges). Western Digital (WD) have ranges Blue, Purple etc.

Could you please recommend the exact make and model of the most durable internal drives around today?
It's not just a case of most durable (we would all like to know that), but most suitable. Drives are optimised for specific usages, and typical PC usage requires different features than PVR usage (which doesn't need to be particularly fast, so a high-speed drive would use significantly more power than necessary, for example).

The most recent discussion about this is here: https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/fvp-5000-hard-drive-upgrade.9536/

I did see a link for ebay
You have to be alert when buying on eBay, I don't recommend it for the timid unless you're buying a throw-away item. Choose a reputable supplier with a physical UK address and phone number in case of problems, and before purchase ring them up and ask a few questions - it doesn't matter what the questions are (but relevant, obviously), you will get a feel for how helpful they are willing to be.

However, despite comments about eBuyer, considering they have the drive you need available currently, for simplicity I would go for this one (assuming you want 2TiB):

i could try [DIY]
Yes, I think you could. You just need to be methodical and not panic. All you need to know is here: https://hummy.tv/forum/threads/hdr-fox-hardware-commissioning-disassembly-repair.5728/post-109121

Do you know the reason why I can't access produce management , diagnostics? just keep getting the virtual usb at 94%
Honestly, I would rather you stopped fiddling with that stuff. Assuming your HDD really is flakey (and unless I have misunderstood, you keep reporting new problems even after multiple rounds of fixdisk), installing software for the CF is writing to a flakey HDD and therefore liable to faults. Who knows what's happening. Get a new drive installed and then you can play with the WebIF facilities.

If you want to maximise the chance of rescuing your existing recordings onto a new HDD, turn off your HDR-FOX now (and I don't mean standby).

Once you have performed the operation as per post 111, although the custom firmware is still installed in Flash, the WebIf etc isn't (that was on the old HDD and isn't on the new one). Accessing the WebIF address from your browser will then offer to install it again.

And as for my old drive once my recording are removed would it be worth keeping as an external drive I would have to buy a housing case for it ?
No, just the USB adapter I mentioned in post 111. Your old HDD is flakey, so you will only use it to copy the existing recordings onto the newly-installed drive, and then bin it.
