In Star Trek land it did. High(ish) altitude burst, supposedly an accident, somehow forces the Earth to reconsider nuclear weapons.

That's OK, the English could have used the versions invented by the Americans/Russians/French etc.
 
But he invented stuff in England. He lived in Bexhill and Hastings (not at the same time silly)
And living in England makes you English. Well, living in Scotland gives you a vote for their parliament and referenda.
