Random factory resets

Good afternoon.

First post here. Please forgive my noob-ness. I tried using the Search tool but with little success. Happy for someone to suggest where perhaps I went wrong?

My HDR Fox T2 has developed a frustrating condition. Upon start-up, I find it may have performed a factory reset. Previous recordings remain but the box wants to walk me through initial setup and scan for channels. The recording schedule is again fresh.

I'm running custom FW 3.13. This is still present following the box's setup steps as too are settings of various packages I have installed. The recording schedule I simply restore (manually) from a backup saved by the auto-schedule-restore package.

How often does it do this reset? It's hard to tell but seems like every 2 or 3 weeks. Any other issues? Not really but on rare occasions - and having adjusted the volume - the volume bar may remain stuck on the screen (needing a hard power off/on) until the next time. I've recently removed disable-ota just in case it was causing the problem? Straws and clutching.

I wonder if the web interface may have an error log or similar that could help? I've looked but cannot seem to find anything. Which is why I thought I'd ask you lovely people :)

Instead of the site's search tool I tried using various variations using a search engine's site: function.
They almost all came up with a few examples but I didn't manage to identify one that was sweeping. Hardly surprising when you look at a few actual result examples as there are a lot of different ways to describe the symptoms.

You could try installing the System Flush image (just like a firmware installation). The link is on the Wiki on the Firmware Downloads page.
You'll have to re-setup again. Any package with settings stored in flash will need re-installing and re-configuring, so you'll need to run the fix-flash-packages diagnostic afterwards.
It would be nice to know if this works. I think the last person who this was suggested to never bothered reporting back.

Thanks for the responses. I'm grateful. Plus I feel somewhat silly! I should have just looked through some of the post history manually! Daft me.

Whilst this issue is a bit of a niggle when it occurs, it doesn't take too long to get the box setup again, wipe the channels I just don't want and restore recordings. I think I've got my routine sorted now ! ;) If I had a spare Hummy then I'd probably try the flush image. But I don't and I'd rather not spend time rebuilding from scratch. The issue's a niggle but I can live with it in the grand scheme of things.

Nobody said "from scratch" - just some minor patching up mostly accomplished with the fix-flash-packages diagnostic, and don't tell me you've never needed to run that!

And even if you do get a random restore defaults, it's easy to restore user settings (with the correct preparation): Restoring User Settings after Restore Factory Defaults
 
You can be advised that I've never had to play with the fix-flash-packages tool, actually. Bar this reset oddity, the only issue I've experienced was a defective HDD (which I replaced).

Interesting. I wonder whether your CF installation is currently running properly! How long have you ben using it? Do you have the no_plugin_autodisable flag set (if you don't know, then you don't)? When using the WebIF, do you get a "some packages have been disabled" message pop-up?

I bought my replacement HDD in January 2017 so it's all been running since then - and happily too. I use CFW 3.13 (build 4028) but forget if it was with or without stock kernel. I only have a few packages installed but they all run. I'd be lost without WebIF :)

no_plugin_autodisable? Not sure where I'd find that so guess "no" :) As for "some packages have been disabled" pop-up, I recall seeing that on very rare occasions. Normally following a blip I didn't know I'd had. But can't recall the last time I'd experienced it.

You are supposed to respond to that message by running the fix-flash-packages diagnostic! Just because the WebIF seems to be working in your browser, doesn't mean all the underpinnings are operating correctly.

Two crashes in quick succession trigger a defensive mode intended to ensure the machine doesn't get stuck in a crash-reboot deadly embrace. Core stuff deeply embedded in the Humax code is disabled. Not everything will work correctly until action is taken.

WebIF >> Diagnostics.

no_plugin_autodisable is run as another diagnostic routine. It prevents the defensive mode being triggered, for those feeling brave. The embedded code does not get disabled, but that is no guarantee it never needs a fix-flash-packages.

The more recognisable facilities implicated include:
  • Real Time Scheduling
  • Undelete
  • Webshell
  • DisableOTA
  • DisableDSO
  • Fan
  • IR
  • Multienv
 
Observation (as such): since removing the DisableOTA package I've not experienced a reset in the last month. Undelete and IR I still have installed (as per the list above).

Almost certainly coincidental - with random events it is very dificult to tell if they have really stopped occuring and why they have stopped,
but since there can no longer be any over the air updastes the package is fairly pointless these days.

I suppoe it is possible th Humax uses the OTA window to perform some clean up work but I think it unlikely

The other thing it does is stop the box waking up pointlessly in the middle of the night to search for non-existent updates.

pointless but harmless apart from insomniacs and minor wear and tear from an extra power cycle
